Chapter Thirteen

“Why haven’t you met with my financial adviser?”

It’s been three months since the wedding. With acute desperation I need to get my hands on a large chunk of my money. When I asked Mouse - again - for access to the funds she unceremoniously told me No - again. Fruitlessly, I argued all the many reasons why those funds were joint property now, but she responded by reminding me that there was nothing joint or shared about this sham marriage, and I could carry on asking until I was blue in the face.

She slipped several places on the Fondness Scale, directly into negative figures.

Still, I have a secret weapon up my sleeve, a very persuasive financial adviser. André, a white South African, has an accent most women can’t seem to hear enough of. The fact that he’s got good bone structure, and a physique to salivate over, certainly help too. And the plan? Tempt Kate with opportunities that directly invest in my business ventures.

“I think I should see someone impartial,” Kate replies flatly. “Your guy might try and convince me to put millions of my money into unsuitable projects with unsatisfactory returns.”

Oh, you did not just say that.

Letting the anger from her comment simmer away, I enquire, “Have you thought about gifting some to charity? Helps with the tax write off.”

Unfortunately there was some hefty inheritance tax on the assets when Kate inherited. Some of that might have been negated if Gramps had just given me the money as a gift, but still, the fund is depleted and could do with a financial bump.

“I’m seeing William’s accountant again later this week actually, but I can meet your person if you like?”

Flummoxed at her concession, I say, “I’ll call him. See when he can fit us in.”

I hit André’s number on my mobile, connecting to him within seconds. He knows I’ve been angling for this for some time, so he’s left a few spots open to suit Kate’s revision schedule.

“When can you do?” I ask her, as André holds on the other end of the line.

“Anything today and tomorrow.”

After a quick consultation with André, I tell her, “Three pm. The offices are in Paddington.”

She goes back to her studies as I watch some sport on TV. And then it’s not long ’til lunch is done and we're in a cab.

After giving the cabbie our destination, Kate asks, “We haven’t talked about the Salcombe house. Should we go and see it? Check on things?”

Intriguingly, she uses we, but I push that aside as I consider the modern holiday home. Glazed to within an inch of its life to maximise the stunning sea view, it’s situated on the south Devon coast overlooking the Kingsbridge Estuary. The hilly, winding descent to the small town with its harbour and marina is all part of the charm. “Have you ever been to Salcombe?”

“No.”

“You’ll like it. It’s very picturesque with golden beaches and turquoise water. One day I’ll take you,” I offer, not specifying exactly when that might be.
